How I Stopped Waking Up at 3am
How I Finally Stopped Waking Up at 3 a.m.
If you are a small business owner, there is a good chance you know exactly what 3 a.m. looks like.
Recent stats show that 78% of small business owners are kept awake at night by the weight of their to-do list. For years, I was one of them. I would stare at the ceiling, my mind racing through a hundred different tasks, none of which were actually getting done.
The problem wasn’t that I didn’t have enough time; it was that I didn’t have a system. Here is the simple Sunday ritual I developed to reclaim my sleep and my sanity.
The Sunday Strategy
My week doesn’t start on Monday morning; it starts in the supermarket on Saturday or Sunday. I ask myself one quiet question: “What do I need to do next week for it to be a success?”
On Sunday evening, I spend just 10 to 15 minutes writing down the answer. I pick three to five things that absolutely must get done. I draw a physical line on the page: those “Must-Dos” go at the top, and everything else goes below the line.
The Monday Morning Shift
When Monday rolls around, I follow a strict protocol:
- Delegate with Enthusiasm: I look at my list and hand off every possible task to my team. I don’t just dump work on them; I empower them to own it.
- The “Deep Work” Rule: I ignore social media and my inbox until at least one of my “above the line” tasks is finished.
- The Reward System: I treat the “crap jobs”, the admin and the easy emails as a reward for later in the day, once the needle has actually moved.
Why It Works
You can’t fool yourself at 3 a.m. Your brain knows if you’ve spent the day being “busy” versus being “productive.” But when you have a clear plan, and you’ve actually moved the needle on your biggest goals, you don’t stay awake worrying. You sleep like a baby because you know you’re in control.
