The Five Minute Finance Mistake
I was asked recently what the biggest mistake a director can make when applying for finance. My answer was simple. Doing the easy thing.
By that I mean clicking on one of those adverts promising apply in under five minutes, instant decision, rates from 5%. It sounds perfect, fast, painless, cheap. Like the cheapest tent at a festival, fine on the shelf, and then it lets you down the moment the weather turns.
The problem is those quick online deals are built to suit their process, not your business. You might get an instant yes, but the structure, the fees, or expensive short-term loans, when there are great alternatives if you know what you’re looking for, can quietly wreck your cash flow, and everything we’ve covered this week, the footprint it leaves, the story it tells an underwriter, the top-ups it forces you into, starts from exactly this moment. What started as easy ends up expensive and very hard to unwind.
And you’re not meant to know all of this. Most directors don’t live in finance every day. They don’t know what else is out there, or which lenders actually fit their business and their particular bump in the road. That’s exactly the gap I fill. Instead of the five minute advert, I offer a five minute conversation, and I can show you options you didn’t know existed before you’re locked into something that looked simple and turned out anything but.
So before you press apply on anything promising an instant answer, ask yourself honestly: have I actually checked what this will do to my cash flow and my future options, or am I just buying the cheapest tent and hoping it doesn’t rain?
To make that easier, I’ve put together Before You Apply: The Underwriting Checklist Every Director Should Read First. It’s exactly what underwriters look for, the traps to avoid, and the questions to ask before you sign anything. Just ask, and I’ll send it straight over – email me now mark@ringroseandco.co.uk
