Why good businesses get turned down for finance

Stop. Before you fill in that online application form, there is something you need to hear.

Right now, thousands of perfectly good businesses are being turned down for finance they could absolutely have. Not because the business is weak. Not because the numbers are bad. Because of two things that nobody in the lending industry ever warns you about, and when you understand them, the whole system starts to make a lot more sense.

The first is messy, incomplete applications. Most directors upload whatever is lying around, last year’s accounts, a few bank statements, and hit Submit, hoping the lender gets the picture. What the underwriter actually sees is gaps. Missing documents. Numbers that do not quite line up. They have a pile of deals on the screen and it is far easier to press decline than to dig for the explanation you meant to give. So they press decline. Or they make you an offer at an interest rate far higher than your business actually warrants. And you have no way of knowing that, because you have nothing to compare it to.

The second is applying to the wrong company entirely. Every online lender has a sweet spot, a type of business they like, a profile they prefer. When you fall outside that, you get a no. Or a very expensive yes. The advert said all businesses welcome, so naturally you assumed that meant you. It did not. Not really. And because lenders do not tell you any of this upfront, you walk away with a decline, a mark on your credit file, and the feeling that nobody will touch you. When the truth is, you just aimed at the wrong target.

You go to a dentist to fix your teeth. A doctor to fix you. A mechanic to fix your car. So why would you go directly to an online lender, on your own, before speaking to someone who does this every single day?
