When your blood boils – what do you actually do?

Before you react to anything today — a difficult client, a member of staff, someone at home — I want to give you one question that will save you more money, more relationships, and more stress than almost anything else I have ever learned.

Here it is.

“Is what I am about to say going to make things better or worse?”

That is it. Simple. And when your blood is boiling, you already know the answer. You are going to make it worse. You know it.

I learned this the hard way. I spent years as a director saying exactly what I thought, the moment I thought it. I told myself it was confidence. It was not. It was ego.

The truth is, the moment you criticise a client, even once, they will remember it forever. Not what led to it. Not whether you were right. Just the feeling of being put down by you.

Last night I booked a taxi for seven o’clock. I went through to tell my wife it had arrived. She was still in her dressing gown.

“Oh, it is here early. I am not ready yet.”

What I wanted to say was obvious. You all know what I wanted to say.

What I said to myself instead was: “Is what I am about to say going to make things better or worse?”

So I went back to the driver and told him we would be five minutes.

When she came out, I told her how beautiful she looked.

We had a fabulous evening.

That question is free. It costs you nothing except your ego. And I promise you — when you start using it with clients, with staff, with the people who matter, it will make you money.

Try it today.

P.S. If business finance is on your mind at the moment, here is something worth knowing. One in two SME loan applications to the UK’s main banks is currently rejected. That is not a small risk. A good broker does not just find you the money. They place you with the right lender, the first time.
