The Energy in the Room

There is one thing people feel before you even open your mouth to say a word: your energy.

Personal energy is the most powerful leadership tool any company director has. If you walk into a room feeling heavy, flat, or defeated, it doesn’t matter how brilliant your strategy is; your team will feel that weight, and they will mirror it. They look to you to set the temperature. If you are lukewarm, the whole business cools down.

I have learnt over 45 years that you cannot fake this. When my energy is gone, I can feel the momentum of the business start to stall. I have developed a specific personal ritual to get that spark back when it’s gone, ensuring I show up as the fox rather than a tired chicken.

Leadership is about more than just what you say. It is about the atmosphere you create the moment you walk through the door.
