Your Comfy Magic Chair
Every Sunday morning I sit in my Magic Chair.
It is a supremely comfortable reclining chair, and for between fifteen and thirty minutes, nobody disturbs me and nothing else happens. I look back at the week just gone. I look forward at the week ahead. And I identify one or two small things I want to improve.
Not transform. Not revolutionise. Just improve. By one percent if necessary. But it has to be something.
And then I make absolutely certain I get them done.
I have been doing this for years. And I will tell you honestly what happens when I do not do it. I drift into the week the same as the week before. I do what the average business does. And I cannot stand that. Not because of what it does to my results. Because of what it does to my self respect.
Unless I am improving, I feel like I am letting myself down. And I am not prepared to do that.
The most successful directors I have ever met are not the ones chasing the big dramatic leap. They are the ones making something fractionally better every single day. Quietly. Consistently. Without making a fuss about it. The cumulative effect over a year is something their competitors simply cannot explain.
And as you know my mantra is. How you do anything is how you do everything. That applies here too. The director who accepts that something is good enough in one area of their business is the same director who accepts good enough everywhere else and that is how everyone in the company operates
So here is my question for you today. Not a challenge. A genuine question.
Do you have something like a Magic Chair on a Sunday morning? A moment that is just yours, where you look back, look forward, and commit to one small improvement?
If you do, brilliant.
If you do not, dare I ask why not?
