What happens if your income suddenly stops?

Apart from your home, most directors have between seventy and ninety percent of their entire income tied up in one place. Their own business.

That’s fine, right up until something you never saw coming knocks it over. And it isn’t always your own mistake. Sometimes it’s four dominoes down the road, a client of a client of a client, an iceberg you never even saw. It’s happening to businesses all the time right now.

So here’s the real question. Could your income survive it? Could the kids still have their holiday? Could you still pay the mortgage?

I’ve seen directors come through the worst, genuinely the worst, because they’d planned for the rainy day. They’d spread their income elsewhere, rather than leaving all of it sitting in one place, waiting for a knock nobody saw coming.

I’ve written a book about exactly this. It’s called Before The Wave, it’s on Amazon now, and it’s built entirely around building your lifeboat before you ever need one.

It’s an hour and a half, cover to cover, and I’ve had people who’ve never finished a business book in their life get through it in one sitting.

Give it fifteen minutes this weekend. If you’re bored by the end, tell me, and I’ll refund you myself, because that means I’ve failed. But I don’t think you will be. I think you’ll get a really good night’s sleep, full of satisfaction, knowing you’ve protected you and your family if that iceberg ever does strike.

Before The Wave. It’s on Amazon, or the link’s in the description if that’s easier. I’m Mark Smillie.
