When you need business finance, it’s tempting to fill in the first promising application and see what comes back.

But I regularly see directors make three mistakes before they’ve even spoken to anyone.

The wrong lender. Your business might be a good prospect, but simply not fit that particular lender’s criteria.

An application that doesn’t explain the full picture. Especially what the money is for and how it will help. You need to describe your circumstances clearly and accurately so the lender can properly assess them.

The wrong type of finance. A loan might look like the obvious answer, but does it actually suit what you need the money for and when you can repay it?

These things can affect your options, the terms you’re offered and whether you get a yes at all.

Before you apply, run it past me. Tell me what you’re trying to do, and I’ll help you look at the options.

And if a personal guarantee is involved, let’s talk about your exposure and whether personal guarantee insurance could be appropriate. The cover and exclusions need looking at carefully.
